Sachem East coach Tina Moon was named the High School North Region Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Moon led the Flaming Arrows to the Class A state championship in November. The team captured its first Suffolk and Long Island titles en route to the state tournament, where it defeated Greene and Mamaroneck, both in penalty strokes.
"It puts a smile on my face to know that these guys worked really hard to get something," Moon said of the team winning it all in her 12th season. "I'm elated for the kids. We had a lot of alumni at the state championship game and that was huge. This championship was for everyone who ever played for Sachem East."
Moon is the first Long Island coach to receive the honor since Diane Chapman (Garden City) in 2006. Moon also won two state titles as a player. She was a star forward at Centereach and went on to play for UConn.
