The East Meadow offense rolled through two opponents, including Long Island's worst defensive unit to average 44.5 points per game for a 2-0 start. Fullback John Wilson has taken advantage of the soft early season schedule, rushing for 189 yards and four touchdowns in last week's blowout of Plainview JFK. Wilson will find the sledding a bit more difficult against host Oceanside at 3 p.m. tomorrow in a pivotal Nassau Conference I game.
Oceanside (1-1) has allowed 28 points per game against undefeated Freeport and Uniondale (1-1). The Sailors can score with halfback Brandy Diaz, who had 235 yards rushing and three scores and quarterback Vinny Guarino, who makes the Sailors multidimensional.
"We'll find out if we're any good this week," East Meadow coach Vinny Mascia said. "We'll have to slow down the Oceanside offense and control the ball. It's a get real weekend. We'll see where we are as a team."
Other key games to watch:
Massapequa at Freeport, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Freeport halfback D'Monte Woody has been unstoppable, rushing for 172 yards and three scores last week, and quarterback Rashad Tucker has lit it up for two weeks in Nassau I. Massapequa (1-1) played Farmingdale very tough in a 10-7 loss. Freeport has excellent skill position players but can they play defense and be physical enough to beat Massapequa?
Westbury at Garden City, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Garden City has two consectuve shutouts in Nassau II. Can the Trojans defense keep junior touchdown maker Shalike Merchant out of the end zone? Merchant rushed for a school-record 1,700 yards a year ago and 17 touchdowns. Last week he continued his assault on opposing defenses with 357 yards and three TDs.
Sachem East at Sachem North, Saturday, 7 p.m.: This is a very interesting intradistrict game in Suffolk I. Sachem North is reeling after a thumping at Connetquot. Sachem East is off to a 2-0 start and hasn't allowed a point. North halfback Kevin Bragaglia is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. You think the other side of the district knows that?
Deer Park at East Islip, Saturday, 1 p.m.: Deer Park halfback Jasawn Thompson is making believers out of coaches in Suffolk II. He ran all over North Babylon last week and has more than 400 yards rushing and five TDs in the Falcons' 2-0 start. The Redmen (1-1) erased a two touchdown halftime deficit to come back and throttle Newfield last week, 29-12.
Half Hollow Hills East at North Babylon, Saturday, 2 p.m.: How about the Thunderbirds at Hills East in Suffolk II! They haven't had a 3-0 start since 1993. A win here combined with a Hills West win at West Islip would mark the first time in district history that both schools started the season at 3-0.
Riverhead at Smithtown West, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Riverhead coach Leif Shay goes for his 100th career win.
Sayville at Westhampton, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.: Sayville coach Rob Hoss goes for his 100th career win.
