Newsday had a chat with William Stanback, Uniondale's speedy tailback (pictured above), and Tyler Desire', the versatile quaterback/middle linebacker about what's in store for the Knights this season. Suffice to say, the All-State stars this could be a big year...
What are your strengths this season?
William: We have a few more weapons that moved up from the junior varsity team. Basically, our team is built around speed and this year, we're trying to find out what our line can really do and if we can block as well as the other teams. I think this year is going to be better than last year.
Tyler: Our first year was a pretty good year even though we didn't make the playoffs. On the field, off the field, we were a pretty good team, but not as mature and disciplined as maybe this year. Last year, it wasn't the best year. But this year, I think we have the potential to be way more disciplined and mature.
Is there one team or one game that you're really looking forward to?
William: Right now, it's Baldwin. That's the only team right now that's on our schedule.
How have you matured or progressed as a player this year?
William: I believe me entering the spring track season last year and coming away with a national championship, I feel like my speed has increased. I believe I got faster and my agility has gotten better, [I'm] shiftier.
How much is speed going to factor into your team offense, you think?
William: It just makes us faster as one team. A lot of teams really can't keep up with us. Where we fall is in our blocking, but other than that, no one can really keep up with us.
Tyler, what type of quarterback do you see yourself as?
Tyler: I'm a run first QB...We're the two captains of the team, Will and myself, and on the field, we just lead by example. Making the first hit, being vocal and making our performance never slips. And then off the field, we have to always keep in classy - in the classroom, outside the classroom, keep things under [control].
What about team chemistry? How is it this year?
William: Our chemistry has to increase [from last year]. I talk to my teammates every day. I call them, they call me. I let them know what's going on and what we have to do to make our job easier.
