Graef TD helps Herricks put away Port Washington

Chris Guglielmi connected with Tom Graef on a 4-yard TD pass with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to give Herricks (1-3) a 15-point lead in its 22-15 win over host Port Washington in yesterday Conference I.

The loss broke the Highlanders' 10-game losing streak, and it was just their second win in their last 25 games.

Blaise Stoddard scored on a 1-yard run with 4:00 left in the game to bring Port Washington (0-4) within seven.

Port Washington got the ball at its own 35 with under two minutes to play, but Eric Kautz had a sack and then Graef intercepted a pass at the Herricks' 35-yard line to end the drive.

Guglielmi passed for 145 yards and three TDs. Chris Matteo had two receptions for 37 yards, both for TDs. John Nictas had eight tackles and a sack in the end zone for a safety. Baldwin 7, Syosset 0: Justin Bell connected with Chris Mertins, who made a one-handed grab in the end zone on third-and-short from the 21-yard line, with 3:30 left in the third quarter to provide the only score for Baldwin (3-1).

Syosset threatened deep inside Baldwin territory in the waning minutes, but Tyler Harper intercepted a pass at the Baldwin 10 to seal the win. Mertens and Mike Abrahams led the defense with seven tackles each. Syosset, the preseason No. 2 seed in the conference, is 2-2.Freeport 41, Massapequa 14: Maurice Irby rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to lead Freeport (3-1).

Quarterback Isaiah Barnes was 5-for-7 for 97 yards and two touchdowns through the air and rushed four times for 54 yards. Dan Olivier had 14 carries for 174 yards and one touchdown and added a 31-yard touchdown reception.

Cedric Smiley had an interception in the end zone to end a Massapequa drive in the first quarter. Jeff Williams also had an interception for Freeport.

Ian Lukaszewicz's 25-yard TD reception from Ryan Neu tied the game at 7 in the second quarter for Massapequa (2-2).Hicksville 35, Plainview JFK 7: Senior Brandon Gamblin rushed 13 times for 118 yards and a career-high four touchdowns to lead Hicksville (3-1).

Joey Leonard ran 10 times for 119 yards and a touchdown, leading a squad that rushed for 392 yards.

Antonio Wilsher added 86 on 13 carries. Pat Rooney was 5-for-5 in extra points, and Leonard made 16 tackles. Plainview JFK falls to 1-3.
