Five weeks into the season and it’s still a great race for the Hansen Award. There are several legitimate candidates and the competition is so stiff, that some of my “honorable mentions” might get move votes than some of the players on my Top 10 list, depending on who you talk to.

I’m putting Mike Pellegrino back in the Top 10 because the Connetquot star, after being slowed by injuries for two straight weeks, had a terrific game last week.

Remember, even though I am on the committee that selects the Hansen Trophy winner and have one of Newsday’s votes, this list is not intended to influence other voters, and players are presented alphabetically not in order of preference.

Zog’s Top 10

Mike Andreassi, Sachem North. The senior running back/linebacker had 16 carries for 89 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown run, in a 28-7 victory over Northport. Andreassi has 434 yards and six touchdowns.

Stacey Bedell, Floyd. The junior running back/defensive back scored on a 98-yard fumble return and a 58-yard run in a 22-13 loss to Longwood. He has run for more than 700 yards, with eight rushing touchdowns.

Steven Ferreira, Sayville. The junior quarterback completed 18-of-27 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns in a 32-12 victory over Amityville. Ferreira has 16 touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards passing. Assuming a long playoff run, Ferreira has a shot at the Suffolk single-season record of 33 touchdown passes held by Commack’s Mike Prahalis.

Kevin Hutchinson, East Islip. The versatile senior quarterback rushed 12 times for 80 yards, completed 5 of 8 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and kicked four field goals in a 19-13 victory over Riverhead.

Preshod McCoy, North Babylon. The senior two-way back rushed 18 times for 100 yards and a touchdown and made an interception in the Bulldogs’ 12-9 victory over Bellport.

Mike Pellegrino, Connetquot. He sure looked healthy. The senior running back/linebacker rushed 21 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns, had three sacks and made 19 tackle in a 20-6 victory over Lindenhurst.

Charlie Raffa, St. Anthony’s. The senior quarterback went 3 for 4 for 79 yards passing and rushed six times for 109 yards and one touchdown as the Friars crushed St. Joseph by the Sea, 56-14.

Ryan Rielly, Glenn. The senior quarterback was 4-for-5 for 115 yards passing with three touchdowns — on plays of 35, 45 and 35 yards — and rushed four times for 90 yards in a 54-14 victory over Stony Brook.

Jesse Scanna, Sachem North. The bruising running back/linebacker rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and added a team-high 11 tackles in a 28-7 victory over Northport.

Steve Skon, Lindenhurst. The senior quarterback was limited to 90 yards passing on 8-for-20, and held without a touchdown pass in the Bulldogs’ 20-6 loss to Connetquot. He did score on a 34-yard run. Skon has eight touchdown passes.

Honorable mention: Karl Allison, Bay Shore; Jeffrey Craig, Islip; Ron Denig, Newfield; Derelle Hunter, St. John the Baptist; Ryan McCoy, Bayport-Blue Point; Michael Richardson, West Babylon.
