Kicking things off

It’s hot. It’s humid. It’s Long Island in August and it’s time for high school football. On Monday morning, the first official day of practice for Nassau and Suffolk public schools, I visited Sachem North, the No. 1 seed in Suffolk Division I. The Flaming Arrows are fresh off a regular-season championship in 2009 with several important starters returning and two skilled transfers from Shoreham-Wading River to add even more punch to an already powerful offense. They are excited and optimistic and should be one of the tri-state areas highly ranked teams when MSG Varsity, a partner with Newsday, presents in Top 25. I will file a report on Sachem North late Monday night, so check back to this blog site a little later.

In the meantime, I thought L.I. football fans would want to know which teams the coaches believe will contend in 2010. Here are the coaches’ seeds for all eight public school leagues. The defending Long Island champions are Freeport, Garden City, Half Hollow Hills West and Seaford. Hills West will not get a chance to defend its Class III title because the Colts are in Division II this season.
