Ryan Norton of Garden City, a first-team Newsday All-Long Island kicker in 2011, has verbally committed to Syracuse, his father Mike told Newsday on Sunday.
Norton, who set the Trojans’ record for career kicking points and had 45 touchbacks last season, is expected to be the Orange’s kickoff specialist next season as well as compete for the primary placekicking job with Ross Krautman, a sophomore who converted 15 of 18 field goals in 2011, but does not have a big leg. Norton will also be the backup punter.
The official national signing day is Feb. 1. Norton’s father said Ryan was also offered at Georgia Tech, Richmond and Bryant, but chose Syracuse after his official visit this weekend.
