St. Anthony's/Iona Prep liveblog

Howdy there, Friar faithful. We're here at Mitchel Field in Uniondale for the St. Anthony's/Iona Prep Catholic League Championship final.

In the third quarter, Raffa's 63-yard TD pass to Brian Sherlock with 7:27 left in the quarter makes it 34-16. Raffa is 7-for-9, with 258 passing yards and four TDs with 4:16 left in the frame. With 7:13 left in the game, the ambulance makes its second appearance of the night, as Dan Fischer gets puled on a punt return and seems to tweak his knee badly. He fumbles the ball and DB Zach Spector makes the 10-yard return for the TD. St. Anthony's leads 41-16. Fischer is taken off the field in a stretcher. Incidentally, Raffa was taken out one play prior on a late hit. He came off the field on his own volition, but seemed to show discomfort in his left arm. He's out of the game. Between the rash of penalties (I've lost count) and the injuries, this is turning into one ugly game. Weston's 66-yard run with 1:54 left to play makes it 41-23.

St. Anthony's LEADS 27-16 at the half.

In the second quarter, Alex Kapp's 27-yard field goal with 5:04 left in the frame drew Iona Prep to within six at 13-9. St. Anthony's, though, came charging right back when Raffa, under pressure, slung a long pass to Kensil over the middle. Kensil broke a nipping tackle by diving DB Travon Malone and had nothing but wide open space to contend with. The 63-yard score made it 20-9. Iona drew to within 20-16 with 1:14 left in the half on Weston's 27-yard run off left guard, but St. Anthony's bounded right back with a 7-play, 1:10 scoring drive, capped by Raffa's 12-yard TD pass to a leaping Kensil, who corralled it by the finger tips in the left corner of the end zone to make it 27-16.

In the first quarter, Charlie Raffa's 49-yard pass to a wide open Brian Kensil over the middle opened the scoring for St. Anthony's with 6:42 left in the first to make it 6-0. The Friars followed up about three minutes later, with Mike Schillizzi's two-yard dive over the left side for a score. James Doktor's extra point made it 13-0. Iona Prep got on the board on the very next possession. A kickoff return brought them to their own 27, but a 10-yard illegal block penalty put the Gaels at the 17. No matter. Sidney Weston broke free off right tackle and streaked up the middle and into the end zone for an 83-yard score to make it 13-6. The extra point attempt was blocked.

Other things of note: Iona Prep WR Kevin Conroy was carted to Nassau County Medical Center by ambulence when he attempted to corall Tom Perley's pass in the end zone and found DB Tim Stackpole's shoulder instead. Officials reported that he showed symptoms of a concussion. The incomplete pass, on third-and-7 with about 5:30 left led to the Iona Prep field goal to make it 13-9.
