Bethpage completed what longtime coach Tom Gargiulo called “one of the best comebacks in my 25 years,” when the Golden Eagles came from behind to knock off Friends Academy 39-34, in a Conference ABC-V game tonight.
Bethpage trailed 30-18 at the start of the fourth quarter, and a quick score pushed that deficit to 32-18 before the Eagles rattled off a 21-2 run to close out the game.
Brianna Black (15 points, five assists) hit a three-pointer late in the fourth to finally put Bethpage ahead, at 35-34. Nicole Gallagher, who scored all 10 of her points in the final frame, and Black followed with a pair of free throws each to ice the game.
Gargiulo attributed the turnaround to a switch to man-to-man defense. It worked. Friends scored 11 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second, but managed just four in the fourth.
The win also puts Gargiulo at 245 wins for his career, putting 250 in reach.
