Herricks coach Glenn Lavey went to the Rex Ryan school of coaching. He says Herricks is the favorite in Nassau Class AA. Of course, he said it jokingly, but he was very jovial after Herricks defeated Hicksville, 37-35, to win the Nassau Class AA-III championship. The win gives Herricks the No. 12 seed in the playoffs and the loss ended Hicksville's season.
Allison Ricchiuti hit a three-pointer with 1:45 left in the game to give Herricks (11-1) its first lead of the game at 33-32. Bridget McHugh, who had six of her eight points in the fourth quarter, hit a jumper with 50 seconds left to extend the lead to 35-32.
Ricchiutii hit three three-pointers after hitting four all season. She came in averaging seven points and finished with 18, including 12 in the second half.
"She hasn't scored much, but she's one of our best players," Lavey said.
Herricks went 4-10 in the same league last season.
"This game sums up our season," Lavey said. "These kids have found a way. We have won six or seven games by five points or less. It looked bad early."
Herricks trailed 23-12 in the second quarter and scored the last five points of the half to cut it to 23-17. Michelle Filangieri's 15 points led Hicksville (10-2).
"We did a lot of losing last year," Lavey said. "We went mostly with a man defense this season after going zone last season. The kids got tough and gritty. We won this game on hustle plays. We didn't dominate any area. This is big for our school."
