Floral Park had a great week with wins over Manhasset and Lynbrook to take firm control of the top spot in Nassau Conference A-III.
Eighth-grader Kaela Hilaire had 24 points and eight assists against Manhasset on Tuesday and followed it up with 13 points, including the game-tying basket with 30 seconds to play, against Lynbrook on Friday.
“She’s getting better and better every day,” Floral Park coach Michael Spina said of Hilaire. “The last three games she has totally stepped it up.”
The Knights have been locking down some of the top scorers in the county including Mineola’s Kerri Medlock (five points), Manhasset’s Halle Majorana (15 points) and Lynbrook’s Brooke Gerstman (17 points). Spina said sophomore shooting guard Valerie Fox has been the top defender on his young squad.
“I can’t say enough about how hard she’s worked defensively,” Spina said. “She’s basically embraced the role of taking on the other team’s best scorer.”
With the 1-2 punch of Hilaire and freshman forward Lorraine Hickman on offense and Fox leading the defense, Floral Park will be the favorite in their next four games and could create a lot of space between itself and the rest of its league.
