After a 2-4 start to the season, Holy Trinity has roared back with five consecutive wins after a 59-54 road win over St. John the Baptist tonight. Katie Poppe had 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 steals. After SJB cut it to 54-43, Poppe hit a three-pointer with 1:18 left in the game. Kelly Carey sealed it with two free throws with 10 seconds left.
“It’s a huge win,” Holy Trinity coach John Lipani said. “Any time you go into St. John the Baptist and win is big. They have been the measuring stick for years. To beat them on their home court is significant.”
Kristen Korzevinski, who had 12 points and 10 assists, was moved to point guard when the winning streak began.
“She wasn’t getting involved enough,” Lipani said. “It forced her to be involved more. She also gets us to play fast and that’s what we want.”
Kelly Carey also came up huge on both ends of the floor. She scored 15 points, including three three-pointers and limited Illinois-bound Alexis Smith to seven points.
“We slipped up early and you learn the most from your losses,” Lipani said. “It gave us a sense of urgency.”
