It has been an emotional week for Kings Park for tragic reasons. Several members of the girls basketball team were close with Nick Hein, a KP senior who killed in a traffic accident last week.

The team, which is dedicating its season to Hein’s memory, had an emotionally positive Thursday, coming back to win against previously undefeated Harborfields, 38-34, after barely practicing during the week.

“The girls really stepped up and were very emotional and used their emotion in a very positive way,” Kings Park coach Tom Edmundson said.

Daniele Buoncore had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Kings Park (8-3, 4-1) which trailed 28-17 after three quarters but outscored the Tornadoes 21-6 in the fourth to win the game. Shannon Ahern (above) forced backcourt violations on consecutive Harborfields possessions during the fourth quarter to aid the comeback.

“The entire game, all we did was focus on our defense,” Edmundson said. “In the fourth quarter we had some nice steals.”

Kasey Stolba had 13 points for Harborfields (10-1, 4-1). The Tornadoes lost point guard Lexi O’Connor to an ankle injury late in the fourth quarter. Harborfields coach Russ Tietjen said O’Connor is having X-rays Friday.
