LIVE BLOG: Garden City vs. Averill Park

State Class A semifinal at Hudson Valley Community College

Garden City (19-3) vs. Averill Park (12-11)

Garden City defeated Glenn in the Long Island Class A championship to get here. Averill Park, the defending state and Federation champions, started the season very slow after being decimated by graduation, but have won five consecutive games to get here. I'll provide updates.


Garden City

Ryan: 5 points

Sullivan: 19 points (9-for-14 from the field), six rebounds, two steals, two assists

Trimmer: 11 points (5-for-7 from the field), eight rebounds

Averill Park

Carney: 11 points, seven rebounds

O'Shea: 11 points, six rebounds

Nunziato: nine points

Nunziato hits a three-pointer to open the quarter and Ryan answers with a three-pointer. AP leads 31-29. Ryan hits a three-pointer with 5:50 left and GC leads 32-31. Nunziato hits a three, her third of the game with 5:27 left before Sullivan scores with 5:14 left. It's tied at 34.

O'Shea scores on a putback with 4:48 left to give AP a 36-34 lead. Sullivan scores on a drive with 3:54 left and it's tied at 36.

O'Shea goes 1-for-2 from the foul line and Sullivan gets a huge offensive rebound, scores and misses the free throw with 3:16 left after getting fouled. GC leads 38-37.

O'Shea hits 1 of 2 free throws to tie the score at 38.

Trimmer goes 1 of 2 from the foul line with 2:35 left to give GC a 39-38 lead.

O'Shea gets fouled going to the basket and hits 2 of 2 with 1:48 left to give Averill Park a 40-39 lead. 

Nunziato misses a three as the shot clock expires, but Mai gets the offensive rebound with 52 seconds left.

Averill Park inbounds the ball with three seconds left and O'Shea gets fouled on a drive with 24 seconds left. She goes 1-for-2 from the line and AP leads 41-39.

Sullivan scores on a drive to the basket with 12 seconds left. She took the ball and wasn't going to be stopped going coast to coast. Mai forces up a runner and Trimmer gets the rebound. Garden City calls timeout with 2.1 seconds left. It's tied at 41.

Trimmer, who has played an excellent game, stepped over the line trying to inbound the ball and Averill Park will have the ball.

And a stunner! Carney catches the lob off the inbounds in the paint and scores on a layup as time expires. Garden City loses a heartbreaker.



Mangels returns and Carney scores inside. Mangels couldn't be aggressive with three fouls. AP leads 22-19. Sullivan hits 1 of 2 free throws with 6:29 left and it's 22-20.

Carney picks up her third foul with 6:08 on an offensive foul. She remains in the game. Trimmer scores and it's tied at 22, but Carney answers on the other end with a layup to make it 24-22 in favor of AP. Carney scores on a putback with 5:10 left to extend it to 26-22.

Trimmer scores off a pass from Sullivan and Trimmer scores off a pass from Mangels with 2:44 left to tie the score at 26.

Mai scores with two seconds left to give AP the lead.

END OF THREE: Averill Park 28, Garden City 26


JoJo Burridge hits two free throws for Averill Park to make it 15-11. Trimmer scored on a layup with 6:36 left and it's 15-13.

Carney draws a double team under the basket and draws a foul with 5:03 left. Trimmer picks up her second. Carney misses both free throws. Sullivan dribbles around several defenders and scores on a drive with 4:35 left. It's tied at 15. 

Carney picks up her second foul and Ryan scores on a runner with 4:06 left, but AP answers on a Burridge jumper to tie the score at 17.

Alison Nunziato hit a three-pointer with 1:30 left and AP leads 20-17. Sullivan gets the rebound, dribbles to the foul line and hits a pull-up jumper with 53 seconds left to bring GC within 20-19. Sullivan finishes the half with 10 points.

HALFTIME: Averill Park 20, Garden City 19


Two minutes in, Averill Park leads 6-4 on a three-point play and a three-pointer. Sullivan and Trimmer have scored for GC.

\Mangels picks up her second foul with 4:42 left. Averill Park leads 9-5 after Ryan hits 1 of 2 free throws. Mangels remains in the game

Ryan hits a jumper to give Averill Park an 11-5 lead and Mangels picks up her third foul with 3:13 left. She is on the bench and that's a big loss for GC. Taylor Carpentier replaces Mangels and hits a jumper. GC pulls to within 11-7 with 2:43 left. 

Sullivan with a pull-up jumper in the final 15 seconds pulls GC within 13-11. A good job by GC especially with Mangels in foul trouble.
