Long Island Lutheran crusied to a 55-38 victory over St. John the Baptist at the Under Armour Classic on Sunday. Staci Barrett led the Crusaders with 15 points, Yuni Sher had 12 and Boogie Brozoski had 10. Aliyah Smith was the only member of the Cougars in double-figures with 14.
After a slow first quarter in which both teams appeared a bit disorganized with LuHi leading 5-2, the Crusaders regrouped in teh second and took a 20-8 lead at halftime.
The Cougars cut the deficit to seven points, 32-25, late in the third but that's the closest they would get in the second half.
Barrett showed great presence inside with several nice plays coming from the post. Brozoski stole the show with her speed and unbelievable play-making ability. The freshman point guard made several outstanding plays as she cut through the lane with Allen Iverson-like agility, made an outstanding block in the first quarter and took a charge or two on defense.
LuHi coach Rich Slater:
On the game:
I think defensively we played really well. I thought we were active in our zone. I think offensively we were going 100 miles an hour until we settled down a little bit in the second half. Our job was to attack Anastasia (Williams), attack Brianna Thomas and try to get them in foul trouble as much as we can because I thought we had decent opportunities to do that. I was really happy with the way we defended.
On whether the 5-2 first quarter indicated some early jitters:
I think both teams were hyped up to play. It’s early in the season hopefully both teams are going to get a lot better. St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony’s and North Bab set the standard for what we’re trying to do. I respect coach Oberg and everything he does there and we’re trying to be like them a little bit.
On limiting Anatasia Williams to four points and executing defensively:
She got frustrated a little bit got in foul trouble. Brianna got in foul trouble. I think we did what we’re supposed to do defensively. Offensively I wasn’t too excited with our patience.
On Staci Barrett:
She works hard. The kids knows one temp and that’s give it everything you can. She’s a fierce offensive rebounder, she loves to compete and we’re lucky to have her.
On Boogie Brozoski:
Listen I always think we have the best player on the floor no matter who we play. She’s 14, 9th grader I look at her like she’s a senior. She runs our show and she’s a consummate team player. I think once she understands when to go, when to pull up, once she learns to do that stuff she’s going to take it up another level. She gives up her body, she takes charges. She’s the best.
