Roundup: Yavorka's layup gives Mt. Sinai girls victory

Rachel Yavorka hit a layup on a backdoor cut off a pass from Emily Bongiorno with one minute left to give Mount Sinai a 56-54 win over Miller Place yesterday in Suffolk League VI girls basketball. Mt. Sinai (7-2) overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Bongiorno had 27 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Sarah Shine had 15 points and five rebounds. Miller Place is 6-3.

Shoreham-Wading River 55, Glenn 30: Samantha Villafranca led SWR (7-2) with 32 points and five assists. Glenn is 6-3.

Amityville 51, Bayport-Blue Point 37: Raven Price had 17 points and 15 rebounds for Amityville (6-3).

Kings Park 46, Comsewogue 40: Jamie Romano had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Marion Kawecki had 12 points and five assists for Kings Park (9-0) in League V.

Sayville 57, Harborfields 44: Emily Paul had 19 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to lead Sayville (6-3). Kristin Chandler, who had five steals, scored nine of her 16 points in the 19-12 fourth quarter.

Hauppauge 45, Rocky Point 35: Julie Williams had 18 points for Hauppauge (4-5).

Huntington 56, Islip 35: Raynisha Witherspoon had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Huntington (4-5).

Mattituck 55, Center Moriches 53: Liz Lasota hit a layup with 1:05 left to give Mattituck (5-1) a 54-53 lead in League VII. Stephenie Pisacano had eight of her 18 points in a 17-14 fourth quarter for Mattituck, which trailed by seven with 4:31 left. Emily Ianno had 18 points and 17 rebounds. Amber Davis' 28 points led Center Moriches (5-1).

Sachem East 65, Brentwood 39: Kristen Doherty had 20 points, five assists and seven steals and Meagan Doherty added 18 points and five steals for Sachem East (7-0) in League I.

Ward Melville 46, Commack 39: Georgia Holland scored six of her 12 points in a 19-9 fourth quarter for Ward Melville (6-1). Commack is 2-5.

Floyd 54, Longwood 44: Monique Walker had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Alicia Bliss added 12 points for Floyd (5-2). Longwood is 1-6.

Smithtown West 78, Half Hollow Hills West 44: Sara English had 26 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks for Smithtown West (7-0) in League IV. Shneeka Center had 35 points. Kimani Jackson's 20 points led Hills West.

Babylon 43, Southampton 42: Julie Piccione hit one of two foul shots with 38 seconds left in overtime to give Babylon (1-5) a 43-42 lead in League VII. Kesi Goree hit a jumper with 57 seconds remaining to tie the score at 38 for Southampton. Catherine O'Malley had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Pierson/Bridgehampton 48, Shelter Island 39: Sarah Barrett scored 19 points and Kaci Koehne added 11 points and 18 rebounds for Pierson (5-2) in League VIII.

St. John the Baptist 71, Sacred Heart 52: Brianna Thomas scored 20 points to lead SJB (5-2) in CHSAA. Christine Bosco scored eight of her 13 points in a 25-8 third quarter for SJB. Alexis Smith had 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
