Sachem East gets a bye into Sunday's championship game and will face an arduous task trying to beat either of the two powerhouses from the city.
Bergtraum has won a Federation title in five of the last seven seasons and Christ the King has won 14 Federation championships since 1990, all but one coming at the highest class level. Sachem East played Bergtraum on Dec. 29 and lost, 65-48.
Sophomore Meagan Doherty didn't play in that game for the Flaming Arrows. Sachem East has won 22 of 23 with the lone loss coming against Bergtraum. Ariel Edwards (Elmont) and Bria Smith (Massapequa) are two of the top players from Christ the King.
After losing in the previous two Suffolk championship games, the Flaming Arrows won it this season. Sachem East has received contributions from several players, but in key spots senior guard Kristen Doherty has scored the big baskets. She scored 22 points in the state final against Shenendehowa and had 31 points and 12 steals in the semifinals against Mount Vernon.
Doherty has 2,248 points and she is 11 points away from moving into seventh place on the Long Island all-time scoring list. Her sister, Meagan, has battled through a left knee injury all season but hit some clutch shots in the postseason. She scored 18 points in the state final.
Caitlin Hopkins has been the threat inside, while Kelsey Ferguson and Stephanie Burrow do a lot of the little things that don't show up in the boxscore.
