Sachem East wins Suffolk AA title; K. Doherty scores 24, Hartley scores a career-high 51

Suffolk County AA Girls Basketball Championship - at Farmingdale State College

Here's a recap of the final seconds:

Sachem East, leading 71-69, forced a jumpball with 14 seconds left. The possession arrow was in their favor. Stephanie Burrow was immediately fouled and hit one of two free throws to give Sachem East a 72-69 lead.

Hartley took the inbounds pass and raced up the sideline, but she had a three-pointer blocked from behind by Kristen Doherty on the ensuing possession. There still 4.3 seconds left on the clock and time for one more play.

The ball was inbounded to Hartley, who was double covered. She handed it off to Fillipone, but her game-tying three-point attempt fell short as time expired. SACHEM EAST WINS THE SUFFOLK COUNTY AA CHAMPIONSHIP, 72-69.

No.1 North Babylon (18-2) vs. No.2 Sachem East (17-3)

It wasn't the greatest start for either team as both struggled to find their stroke in the first couple of minutes. Bria Hartley is 1-for-4 with two air balls. Kristen Doherty has four points. Sachem East leads 7-2 with 4:11 left in the first quarter.  

Things are starting to heat up a bit. Sachem East ran off two straight layups for an 11-6 lead. But North Babylon came back as Hartley scored on a driving layup and a three-pointer, sandwiched around a Kelsey Ferguson layup. Sachem East leads 13-9 with 1:10 left in the first quarter.

Offense was extremely hard to come by, especially for North Babylon as Kristen Doherty blocked a three-point attempt by Hartley. Caitlin Hopkins scored on a layup with 14 seconds left in the first quarter for Sachem East. Sachem East leads 15-9 after one quarter.

Not a great start for North Babylon as forward Jeanette Scott picked up her third foul early in the second. Caitlin Hopkins hit two straight layups to start Sachem East's scoring. Hartley answered with a layup, but Meagan Doherty hit a three to give the Flaming Arrows a 22-11 lead with 5:44 to go in the second. Jeanette Scott just drained a free throw for North Babylon. Sachem East leads 22-12 with 4:55 left in the second.  

Sachem East is having its way in the paint as Kathleen Everson and Caitlin Hopkins scored on consecutive layups for a 26-12 lead. Hartley answered with a three to stop the bleeding. Hopkins came back with another layup, but it was Hartley again with a layup followed by a three. Casey Fillipone added a layup for the Bulldogs, cutting the lead to six. Sachem East leads, 28-22, with 1:30 left in the second quarter.

The half ended in a flurry for North Babylon as the Bulldogs ended the half on an 8-3 run. Hartley scored six of North Babylon's eight points. Sachem East leads 31-30 at the half.

Hartley has 23 points at the half for North Babylon. Caitlin Hopkins leads Sachem East with 12 points and Kristen Doherty has six.

THIRD QUARTER

Hartley is beginning to get it going as she scored four points in the first 1:40 for North Babylon. But Sachem East had an answer with a jumper from Ferguson followed by a layup and two free throws for Kristen Doherty. Sachem East leads 37-34 with 5:01 left in the third.

Sachem East is continuing to dominate the paint. Caitlin Hopkins scored on consecutive layups and Kristen Doherty added a bucket off a steal to give the Flaming Arrows a 43-34 lead with 3:02 left in the third.

Everson and Kristen Doherty scored on layups sandwiched around a Hartley layup. Hartley picked up her second foul in the process.Sachem East leads 47-36 with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Sachem East scored four quick points for a 51-38 lead and were poised to pull away, but Hartley ended the third with a three to keep North Babylon within striking distance. Sachem East leads 51-41 after three quarters.

Sachem East is putting on a clinic on scoring in the paint as Doherty scored after being fouled in the paint and Hopkins followed with a layup to extend the Flaming Arrow's lead to 55-43. But Charise Wilson connected on three free throws after being fouled behind the arc for North Babylon.

Kelsey Ferguson countered with two free throws for Sachem East, but Hartley came right back with a three-point play. Sachem East leads 57-49 with 5:48 to go in the game.

The game is far from over as Charise Wilson hit a three and Hartley converted another three-point play and a layup sandwiched around two free throws by Kristen Doherty, cutting the lead to two. Sachem East  called a timeout and leads 59-57 with 4:27 left.

The intensity is building. Ferguson hit a free throw to extend Sachem East's lead to 62-57, but Brianna Jones answered with a three to bring North Babylon within two. Bria Hartley added a free throw to make it a one-point game. Ferguson hit a free throw, but Brianna Jones hit another big jumper for North Babylon The score is tied, 63-63 with 2:20 left.

This is becoming a game to remember. After trading baskets for a minute, Hartley drained a three for her 50th point of the game. She followed that with a free throws after Stephanie Burrow hit a layup for Sachem East. The score is tied at 69 with 46 seconds left.

Kirsten Doherty hit two free throws. Sachem East leads 71-69 with 45 seconds left.
