Live from SUNY Cortland, state Class C final: Shoreham-Wading River vs. Carthage (III)

Okay, folks. We're down to out last of six games here over the weekend at SUNY Cortland, as Shoreham-Wading River (18-2) will take on Carthage of Section III (19-3) in the state Class C final coming up in just a couple minutes.

Earlier in the day, Farmingdale knocked off Lakeland/Panas 6-5 to win their second straight Class A final, and just moments ago, Garden City earned 20-10 win over Fox Lane to win their fifth straight Class B title and 11th overall.

With a win SWR will capture its fourh straight Class C crown and will complete a second straight Long Island sweep.

But for now, let's get back to the Class C game. The Wildcats have won three straight Class C state titles, including a 13-11 win over HFL in last year's final.

Yesterday, SWR defeated Honeoye Falls 14-11 here at Cortland to advance to its fourth straight title game. Jen DeVito scored the game-tying and game-winning goals 38 seconds apart for SWR, which trailed 11-8 with 15:54 to play.

Kait Brosco, who had four goals and two assists, leads the team with 100 points (64 goals, 36 assists). DeVito leads the club with 67 goals on the season, while Chelsey Newman has racked up 43 goals and 27 assists, and Erin McMullan has made 153 saves.

SWR has outscored its playoff opponents 61-37.

Carthage, which is playing in its second straight state tournament, past Nyack of Section I in yesterday's semifinal at Tompkins Cortland Community College. There other playoff wins were by three, one and two goals. They are led by senior attack Katie Ferris and junior attack/middie Kailah Kempney.

SWR defeated Carthage 21-11 in last year's state semifinal.

**UPDATE** (20:41): Katie Ferris scored on a free position to give Carthage the early 1-0 lead.

**UPDATE** (12:10): Two Jen DeVito goals sandwiched Alexis Egeberg's goal for Carthage, and we're currently tied at 2.

**UPDATE** (haltime): SWR leads 6-5. Brosco scored on an assist from DeVito with 7:40 left in the half to give SWR its first lead of the game at 3-2. Carthage's Amy Tiernan tied it at 3 2:20 later, but Brosco and Megan Gersbeck scored back-to-back goals to make it 5-3.

Kailah Kempney closed it to one on her goal 1:51 before intermission, then Brosco scored her third of the game on an assist from DeVito with 52.3 seconds to go.

Ferris scored with 3.9 seconds on the clock to again make it a one-goal game.
