Northport junior midfielder Cortney Fortunato verbally committed to Notre Dame Monday evening. Fortunato, the youngest member of the U19 women’s national team, said the main reason why she chose Notre Dame was the campus.

“I am absolutely in love with the school and the campus. You just feel something special when you walk onto campus,” Fortunato said. “It’s an extremely prestigious school with amazing academics.”

Fortunato, who scored the state championship-winning goal with 1.3 seconds left in double overtime, will join U19 teammates Allie Murray and Garden City’s Barbara Sullivan as well as Hauppauge’s Stephanie Peragallo at Notre Dame.

The No. 1 ranked junior by Inside Lacrosse, Fortunato finished second in scoring on Long Island last year with 87 goals and 49 assists. She said the coaching staff at Notre Dame, led by first-year coach Christine Halfpenny is “highly motivated to win.”

“I think we have the ability to win,” Fortunato said, “and I want to help make the program excel and win a national championship.”
