The Port Jefferson girls soccer team spent its ride home from Sleepy Hollow High School after a 3-0 state Class C regional win over Haldane watching film. For them, a film as important as any on a quest to winning back-to-back state championships — The Little Mermaid.
“The goal is to watch as many Disney movies as possible,” said Jillian Colucci, who scored her 28th goal and 45th point of the season in the win. “We were going to watch Beauty and the Beast but the disc wasn’t in the box.”
And it won’t be their final movie as Port Jefferson (15-1-1) advances to the state Class C semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Saturday Nov. 12 at Cortland High School.
“We are all so excited,” Colucci said. “It’s been our goal since the beginning of the season to come back and win it back-to-back to finish up our season with an exciting end.”
Brittany Fazin scored the opening goal with 25:04 remaining in the first half after beating two defenders and the Haldane keeper one-on-one.
“Honestly, it felt amazing,” Fazin said. “It was insane because I usually don’t score first considering I’m usually in the midfield but it made me feel so great and open up the game for us.”
Colucci added her goal off a corner kick from Clare O’Connor with 9:09 remaining in the first half.
“I’m amazed sometimes watching her, in awe watching her,” said coach Michelle Aponte adding that Colucci is constantly looking to set up her teammates for goals. “She’s such a great player.”
Grace Swords added the final goal from 18 yards off an assist from Amelia Zamek 31 seconds into the second half. The back line of Katie Connolly, Corinne Scannell, Alexa Wakefield and Camryn Ward had another strong game for Port Jefferson with Brianna Scarda adding six saves.
