The South Side girls soccer team is built Ford tough.

As in Katie and Kelsey Ford.

Katie Ford may not start, but she sure knows how to finish. Last season, she scored the winning goal in the state title game.

On Monday, she scored off a header by Christina Klaum with 7:15 left to lift No. 1 South Side to a 2-1 win over No. 2 Garden City in the Nassau Class A final at Cold Spring Harbor.

"Especially since I don't start, I try to do something to make an impact on the field," said Katie, who isn't related to Kelsey but does have a sister, Allie, who is on the team. "Having clutch goals like these means so much to me."

After Garden City's Haley O'Hanlon broke a scoreless tie on a 25-yard free kick with 21:36 left, Kelsey Ford served a perfect corner kick to the far post where Stephanie Leonardo knocked it in to tie the score at 1 with 13:31 left.

South Side advances to the Long Island championship against Islip at 5 o'clock Tuesday at Dowling Sports Complex.

"We wanted to prove to everyone that we're as strong as we were last year but we're a new team this year and not living off the past," Klaum said. "It feels great to be a champion again."
