Last Season: 12-0 (14-1), won Class A county championship
The league, and perhaps the county, is Sayville’s to lose. The Golden Flashes rode a strong sophomore class (and all-state seniors Dariann Sellitti and Kelly Santangelo) to a county title last season, and fell just short of a Long Island championship, losing to eventual state champion on penalty kicks. Sellitti and Santangelo may have moved on to D-I universities, but the junior corps returns. Sayville has a lot of weapons and will be strong on the attack and with ball control led by senior Kim Marra, who may also play in the back, senior midfielder Emily Meier and junior forward Madison Hoon, who was MVP of the county championship game last season. Sayville’s biggest loss was in the back, but alleviating those departures is an presence of outstanding junior defender Samantha Bishop and keeper Olivia Coley-Bishop.
“We lost the shootout in the Long Island championship last season,” Sayville coach Joe Nasta said, “and we’ve been looking forward to this season since that day.”
Season Opener: Sept. 10, at Bayport-Blue Point
Last Season: 9-3 (10-4-1), lost 3-0 to Kings Park in quarterfinals
Miller Place is one team that could stand between Sayville and a league title. An experienced bunch that returns 12 seniors and is bolstered by the healthy return of senior forward Kayla Ceschini, who suffered a concussion midway through last season. Joining her are senior midfielder Karysa Pikoulas, senior defender Caroline Fitchett and junior midfielder Erin Johnson.
Season Opener: Sept. 14, at Mattituck
Last Season: 5-7 (5-9-1)
A young team that should be able to hold its own. After missing the playoffs by one game last season, Rocky Point graduated three key seniors but return junior defender Jackie Abbate and junior center-midfielder Arianna Schultz. A scrappy defensive-minded team that will look to capitalize on any opportunities that come their way.
