It wasn't easy, but Cold Spring Harbor defeated Ward Melville, 419-423, Wednesday to win the Long Island boys golf championship at Bethpage Black.
"This was definitely the hardest course we played on all season," said the Seahawks' Steve Tanen, who shot 81. "It was a test for us. We struggled a little but we pulled through."
Sophomore Chris Gabriele had the best score of the day, a 3-over-par 74. "For him to shoot that number is phenomenal," Cold Spring Harbor coach Jamie Lawlor said. "That was an unbelievable round of golf."
No other golfer from either team broke 80. "I felt good all day," Gabriele said.
CSH's other scores were Anthony Wagner (83), Morgan West (88) and Tim Schnier (93). Tanen, Gabriele and Wagner will be in the state championships at Cornell in Ithaca on June 2-4.
