Strong winds didn't worry Plainedge's Michael Frizalone on his way to winning the Nassau County Golf Championship by seven strokes at Bethpage State Park on Wednesday.
Frizalone shot a one-under 71 on the Blue Course and an even par 70 on the Red Course for his 141 winning total.
The senior's confidence was high, even with the wind as a foe. "I guess I'm just comfortable," Frizalone said. "I played the shot the same, just with a different club."
Frizalone said he's gotten professional instruction and is making more putts.
"He's got swagger," Plainedge coach Brian Connors said with a laugh, "He's an ultimate competitor. He blew away the field."
Friends Academy won the team championship. Senior Chris White was second (148) and junior Cole Vissicchio was third (149), leading the Quakers to their first team title since 2006.
"This is an exciting moment for these guys. They have great concentration and focus and their hard work paid off," said Friends Academy coach Geoff Nelson.
Friends Academy will play Suffolk County champion Ward Melville on May 27 on the Black Course at Bethpage for the Long Island title.
Frizalone, White and Vissicchio, along with Chris Yeom (New Hyde Park), Eric Schissel (Port Washington), Jack Rosenberg (Cold Spring Harbor), Ryan McCarthy (South Side), David Goldstein (Roslyn) and Mathew Sweeney (Floral Park) also qualified for the state tournament.
