Hills West's Gelman wins Suffolk tennis singles title

Top-seeded Nolan Gelman of Half Hollow Hills West beat second-seeded Scott Johnson of Kings Park, 6-1, 6-0, in the final match of the Suffolk Division I Individual tennis championships at Sachem East Wednesday.

In the consolation match, fourth-seeded Brandon Stone of Whitman beat No. 3 Zane Ali (Hills East) 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. In the doubles final, No. 6 Chris Hunter and Eric Bertuglia (Hills East) beat No. 1 Michael Covey and Scott Rabinowitz (Hills West) 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). Fifth-seeded Sam Gudeon and Matt Basile (Smithtown West) beat No. 7 Eric Chalis and Brian Chalis (Harborfields) 6-1, 6-4, in the consolation.

BASEBALL

St. Dominic 5, St. Anthony's 4: Derek Hirsch doubled in Brandon Stahl in the top of the seventh to give St. Dominic (8-6) a 5-3 lead in CHSAA. Spencer Bilello went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Robert Galligan struck out five in five innings to get the win.

Mineola 14, Manhasset 7: John Caputo hit a two-run home run in a six-run first inning and struck out six in five innings to lead Mineola (12-6), which clinched a share of the Nassau Conference A-II title. Ryan Jenkins went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Anthony Fabrico went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs. girls BADMINTON

Calhoun 7, Mepham 0: Cindy Lee defeated Jess Lennox 21-16, 21-14 at third singles to lead Calhoun in a Nassau County semifinal. Calhoun will face Great Neck South in the championship at 4:15 p.m. Friday at Bellmore JFK High School.

Great Neck South 6, Hempstead 1: Annie Wu and Grace Kim defeated Stephany Broxton and Raquel Rivas in first doubles, 19-21, 21-9, 21-16, to lead Great Neck South in a Nassau County semifinal.boys volleyball

Sewanhaka 3, New Hyde Park 2: Oscar Corado had 21 assists, Bobby Edjamian had 13 aces, and Felix Corona added nine aces and six kills as Sewanhaka handed New Hyde Park its first loss, 25-13, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, in Conference IV.BOYS GOLF

St. John the Baptist 6, Bishop Molloy 1:Mark Reilly shot a 1-over-36 on the front nine at Stonebridge Golf Links to lead St. John the Baptst in CHSAA.
