Huntington's McQueen wins wrestling honors

Huntington's Damon McQueen pinned Uniondale's Derrick Whitlock in 1:51 in the 125-pound final of the Ted Peterson Tournament at Island Trees Saturday. McQueen, a defending state runner-up, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler; teammate Nigel McNeil, the 112-pound champion, had the most pins in the least time (three in 3:35).

Massapequa (285.5) won the tournament by 18.5 points over Uniondale behind champions Rudy Lanzilotta (119 pounds) and James Ondris (152).

Glenn dominates. Vinny Punzone of Glenn earned a 9-7 victory over Connetquot's Sean McCabe in the 112-pound final of the Smithtown West Tournament. The Knights won the tournament by 136 points over Connetquot. In a matchup of All-County performers in the 189-pound final, Jake Smith of Smithtown West defeated Glenn's Joe Giaramita, 8-6, to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. There were seven finals between Glenn and Connetquot wrestlers, with Glenn winning six.

Seven champs lead Commack. Chris Palazzolo's 11-7 win over Mark Jerrick of Amityville earned the 140-pounder from Commack the Champion of Champions honors at the Copiague Tournament. Commack, behind seven champions, won the tournament by 180.5 points over Bay Shore. Fred Gamble of Bay Shore earned a 3-2 victory over Commack's Rocco DeForca in the 215-pound final and was given the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

St. Anthony's 41, Sachem East 39: Chris Brienza (103 pounds) and Jimmy Morris (112) had back-to-back pins before Grant Greene (119) picked up a technical fall for St. Anthony's at the Friars' dual meet tournament. In a 47-29 win over Riverhead, Brienza and Morris recorded tech falls and Greene scored a pin. All three had pins in an 84-6 victory over Dobbs Ferry (Sec. I).

GIRLS Fencing

Oyster Bay 21, Wheatley 6:Carolyn Cyrana and Jill Murray each went 3-0 in sabre, Courtney Collins was 3-0 in epee, and Megan Cifuni was 3-0 in foil for Oyster Bay (6-0).

Valley Stream Central 18, Hewlett 9: Arooba Amjad went 2-0 in foil and Tayana Labissiere went 2-0 in epee for Valley Stream Central.
