Sparked by a stingy defense, the Long Island open women's team made short work of Adirondack, 63-36.
Dowling's Christie Marrone (17 points) and former Sacred Heart standout Briana Sloper (St. Thomas Aquinas) had 14 points to lead Long Island. It was a big first win for the women, who haven't won a medal since taking home the gold in 2005.
The open men's team wasn't as fortunate as it fell, 83-80, to Western. Central Connecticut State's Robby Ptacek (Bayport-Blue Point) led Long Island with 24 points. Stony Brook's Chris Martin added 13 points.
The men may have also lost JJ Walsh for the duration of the games. Walsh was hospitalized after suffering an apparent rib injury.
