Roundup: Johnson pitches North Shore in upset of Clarke in baseball playoffs

Cody Johnson allowed six hits and two runs to go with three strikeouts in six innings in leading No. 15 North Shore to an upset over second-seeded Clarke, 11-2, in the second round of the Nassau Class A baseball playoffs Monday.

Lou Mastellone had a two-run single, Stefan Schwartz and Jake Otis (3-for-4) each had RBI singles and Colin Henneberger (3-for-4) had two hits and an RBI in a 10-run first inning for North Shore (14-7), which will visit top-seeded Wantagh in the quarterfinals at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.Valley Stream North 6, Garden City 5: Ricky Gerbino's two-run double in a six-run sixth gave No. 13 Valley Stream North (14-7) a 6-2 lead in the second round of the Class A playoffs. Anthony Martelli and Nick Baratto each went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Spartans, who advanced to the semifinals and will face and opponent to be determined.

Southampton 9, Babylon 0: Chris Pike struck out 14 in his second no-hitter of the season to lead Southampton (12-4) in League VII. He walked two, including the first batter of the game. Jeb Schmidt had two RBIs.

Rocky Point 1, Sayville 0: Paul Sorrano scored the winner on a fielding error with two outs in the bottom of the 11th for Rocky Point (11-5) in League VI. He'd led off with a double and moved to third on Connor Molloy's bunt. Joe DeFrank allowed four hits and struck out 13 in nine innings and Cody Thixton pitched two innings of relief for the win.

Sachem North 9, Connetquot 8: Alec Sole's three-run double in the seventh gave Sachem North (11-5) a 9-8 lead in League II. Vinny Peluso gave up three hits in four scoreless innings of relief for the win. Hauppauge 4, Islip 3: Angelo Biondo (2-for-4) doubled in Robbie Schein to give Hauppauge (13-3) the lead in the 10th inning in League V. Jake Seymour's sacrifice fly had tied it at 3 in the seventh for Islip. St. John the Baptist 6, St. Anthony's 4: Tyler Pope singled in Sal Sciara to break a tie at 4 in the fifth for SJB (11-6) in CHSAA. Brian Hunter hit a three-run homer and Brian Rush pitched three innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

girls lacrosseJericho 12, Lynbrook 10: Marissa Resnick's goal with 15:00 left gave No. 9 Jericho (8-7) a 9-8 lead in the first round the Class B playoffs. Renee Kiviat had tied the score after Jericho rallied from an 8-4 deficit early in the second half. Caroline Motschwiller had four goals and three assists for Jericho, which will visit No. 1 Garden City at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

MacArthur 20, New Hyde Park 13: Candice Noakes had seven goals and four assists to lead No. 7 MacArthur (6-4) in the first round of the Class B playoffs. Senior Nicole McKee added a career-high seven goals and three assists and Jessica Gattus had a goal, two assists and three interceptions. MacArthur will visit No. 2 Wantagh at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Plainedge 13, Valley Stream Central 5: Kim Kovar and Kristen Van Wie each scored three goals for No. 5 Plainedge (10-5), which will visit No. 4 Calhoun at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal. Babylon 13, Glenn 11: Julie Piccione had four goals and three assists to lead Babylon (8-6) in Division II.

Boys lacrosseConnetquot 13, East Islip 12: Craig Kiernan scored his fifth goal off an assist from Mike Pellegrino with 4:49 remaining in the fourth quarter to put Connetqout (11-3) ahead, 13-11, in Division I. Tom O'Neill scored with three minutes remaining for East Islip to create the final margin. Zach Oliveri (16 saves) made two point-blank stops in the final 10 seconds to end the game.

Middle Country 12, Half Hollow Hills East 10: Steven Boyle had three goals and one assist and Billy Jordan and Tom Telesca each had three goals for Middle Country (7-7) in Division I.softballNorthport 3, Sachem North 2: Nicole Pirretti's three-run homer in the sixth gave Northport (6-13) a 3-1 lead in League II. Molly Jarrett, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth, allowed two hits and struck out 10.

Riverhead 12, Copiague 0: Julia Morrow threw a perfect game with nine strikeouts and went 3-for-5 with five RBIs to lead Riverhead (16-3) in League IV. It was the second perfect game of the senior's career. Colleen Dougherty was 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs.

boys tennisCold Spring Harbor 4, Hewlett 3: Jensen Reiter and Alex Tropiano defeated Ryan and Matt Zuckerman 6-0, 6-2 in the deciding first doubles match for Cold Spring Harbor in a Nassau Division I semifinal. CSH will face Roslyn or Great Neck North at a site and date to be determined.boys volleyballFarmingdale 3, Herricks 2: Sean Garvey had 15 kills and 20 assists and Zach Wetzel added 20 kills and 15 assists for Farmingdale in a 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 win.
