Sachem North is best LI finisher in National High School Cheer Championship in Orlando

Lacrosse? Soccer? Nah. Turns out, Long Island is the hotbed of cheerleading.

Over a dozen local high school teams proved as much last week, when they placed in the National High School Cheer Championship in Orlando, Fla. Defending Medium Varsity champion Sachem North led all Long Island finishers with second place in that division. Mount Sinai finished second in Large Varsity Division II.

The next highest placer was Mepham, which came in third in World School Small Coed Team Cheer (open to teams worldwide), while Hauppauge finished fourth in Small Varsity Division I. The nationally televised event, held last Saturday and Sunday at Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports Arena, attracted hundreds of teams from all over the world. There are 41 divisions, ranging from Youth Recreational to World School Group Partner Stunt.

Other schools to place include Connetquot, Bethpage, Plainedge, Ward Melville, Lindernhurst, MacArthur, Brentwood, Sachem East, Sayville, and Smithtown East.
