With his team trapped in a pitchers' duel, Babylon coach Rick Punzone thought he needed to get a little imaginative offensively.

He did in the bottom of the fifth as he called for a double steal.

The move worked as Kayla Yantz stole home successfully for the game's first run.

Brianna Goodfellow added an RBI single, scoring Mary Tighe, later in the inning and that was all No. 1 Babylon needed Friday as it edged third-seeded Center Moriches, 2-0, in Game 1 of a Suffolk Class B best-of-three final series.

"It was a first-and-third situation and no one out and we were trying to make something happen in a zero-zero game," Punzone said.

The pitching was outstanding on both sides.

Babylon's Tiana Giuliano struck out 12 and walked two in a three-hitter for the win.

"Tiana had one little shaky inning, but she was pretty dominant," Punzone said. "She had both of her walks in the fourth."

Erin Creen threw a three-hitter for Center Moriches and both of the runs she surrendered were unearned.

Game 2 is Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Center Moriches.
