Kerri Apicella, the All-County Oyster Bay star, notched her 500th career strikeout on April 23 against Seaford. The feat came in a 3-2 loss, but Apicella pitched well against one of Nassau’s best teams in the ABC-I/II crossover.
“It’s been great having her,” Baymen coach Tim Brady said of the senior. “She’s a workhorse and a hard worker who wants the ball every day.”
She now has 539 Ks. That goes along with a 0.98 career ERA, a .169 opponents' batting average against, and a 2009 Class C championship.
What’s more impressive is that Apicella, who is headed for Catholic University in the fall, accrued that total with the Baymen in just three seasons. She pitched one game (three strikeouts) as an eighth-grader for Oyster Bay, then spent her freshman year in parochial school (played for St. Anthony’s). She returned in 10th grade.
“She loves the game,” Brady said. “And, what’s big is that she gives Oyster Bay credibility when we step on the field. We always feel confident when she’s on the mound. She’s the engine that drives us everywhere. This year she’s also gotten a lot of big hits for us.”
