Pierson/Bridgehampton wins softball regional crown
Bridget Canavan had two RBIs during a three-run fourth inning yesterday as Pierson/Bridgehampton upended Tuxedo, 4-1, in the state softball Class C Southeast Regional Final at Heroes Field in Nanuet, Westchester County.
Melanie Stafford tossed a complete game, yielding only a sacrifice fly to pick up the win.
Tuxedo (14-3) loaded the bases on two occasions against Stafford, but could not take advantage.
Julia Schavoni added an RBI-double during the three-run fourth for the Whalers, who have won five straight.
Alison Toscano's sacrifice fly in the fourth was Tuxedo's only run.
The Whalers (13-6) move on to the Class C state semifinal beginning Saturday at the Adirondack Complex.
Tuxedo advanced to the Southeast Regional final after a 13-7 win over Haldane of Section I earlier in the day.
Tuxedo's Kelly Ross had three hits and three RBIs and Brittany Burton had three hits and two RBIs.
In Pierson/Bridgehampton's first game of the day, the Long Island Class C Final, Stafford struck out seven and allowed one run on two hits as the Whalers cruised past East Rockaway, 9-1.
Rebecca Speckenbach had a three-run homer and Casey Gilbride had three RBIs for Pierson/Bridgehampton.
