The East Meadow softball team eschewed the pencils and the books Wednesday, and possibly left their teachers with perturbed looks.
The Jets defeated MacArthur to win their first Nassau championship since 1994 on Tuesday, then several of them spent Wednesday at the beach celebrating.
"We went to Point Lookout and stayed there until about 3 o'clock," Rachel Sidney said of senior cut day, an unofficial, student-contrived holiday. Hey, it was a 90-degree day. "The teachers kind of know."
It was Sidney's two-out, two-strike single to center that sparked the rally for East Meadow in the top of the ninth.
Danielle Cutuli followed with a triple to right-centerfield that gave the Jets a 3-2 lead. They went on to add two more runs.
"It was so clutch and I couldn't have been more happy for [Danielle]," said Sidney, a McDaniel College (Md.)-bound senior.
Thursday was back to school - and softball, in preparation for the Long Island championship June 8.
