LI Player of the Year
Camhi led her Syosset team to a 14-1 record and its second straight Long Island championship over Half Hollow Hills West.
DIANA VAMVAKITIS / JAMIE HANN
The senior duo blazed through competition this year on their way to the Suffolk County doubles title - a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Northport sisters Bridget and Mickey Harding. Hann, who lost one match all year, and Vamvakitis were seeded third in the state tournament and eventually fell in the quarterfinals.
The Quinnipiac-bound senior, ranked ninth in the state, bested first-seeded Camhi for the Nassau individual title, 7-6 (4) 6-2, despite having fallen to her twice in the regular season. Raynor's victory earned her a two seed and first-round bye going into the state championship, before eventually falling in the quarterfinals.
Smergut, only a sophomore, bested Samantha Elgort, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to capture Suffolk County individual title, and earn a six seed going into the state competition. A powerful, dynamic player, Smergut bested three other opponents before falling to Newsday Player of the Year Hannah Camhi in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 2-6.
Half Hollow Hills East
The Hills lefty made it as far as the quarterfinals in the state individual tournament before falling to eventual state champion, Jamie Loeb. Ranked 14th in the state, the Division I champion defeated East Islip's Sarah Finger before falling to Smergut in a tightly-contested match in the county individual championship.
