In previous years, yesterday's matchup between Half Hollow Hills West and Hills East might have yielded a different result.

East (7-2), the five-time defending Suffolk champs, entered the season riding a 100-match winning streak against Suffolk competition. But West's win over them on April 16 snapped the streak at 106, and its 4-3 win Thursday was affirmation that the Colts (8-0) are this year's team to beat.

"Maturity has helped us to be consistent," West coach Kim Langendorfer said.

Jackson Weisbrot and Brandon Nomberg rallied at No. 2 doubles, winning, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, to tie the overall score at 3.

Minutes later, Tyler Nierman and Eric Hechler put the finishing touches on their comeback, match-clinching win at third doubles. Sahil Verma and Justin Dubler won the first set, 2-6, but Nierman and Hechler won consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Colts the 4-3 win.

Duane Davis (second singles) and Cameron Klepter (fourth singles) also had wins for West.

"We know we're each other's best competition," Langendorfer said. "I think it's a mutual respect, more so than a rivalry."
