Hunter, Goldberg, Siedman lead Hills East tennis

Chris Hunter defeated Richard Sipala, 6-3, 6-2, in first singles and Sam Goldberg and Evan Siedman beat Marius Grant and Thomas Grant by the same scores in second doubles to clinch a 5-2 victory for top-seeded Half Hollow Hills East over No. 2 Ross Tuesday in the Suffolk boys tennis team championship at Smithtown East.

The title is Hills East's fifth county championship in the last six years. The Thunderbirds play Cold Spring Harbor for the boys tennis Long Island championship at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Smithtown East. Ross finishes at 17-1.


Sachem East 1, Centereach 0: Junior Lindsey Treanor tossed her first no-hitter of the season, striking out nine and walking none in a Suffolk Class AA softball quarterfinal victory for No. 5 Sachem East over No. 13 Centereach.

Only an error in the sixth inning kept Treanor from the perfect game. Samantha Smith led off the bottom of the first with a walk, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored the game's only run on a passed ball. Sachem East (18-4) will play at top-seeded Bay Shore at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Bay Shore 6, Deer Park 1: Liz Weber went 3-for-4 with an RBI and threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts to lead No. 1 Bay Shore (21-0) over No. 8 Deer Park. Freshman Courtney Syrett went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Taylor McGowan had a two-out RBI double.

Connetquot 9, Smithtown West 8: Marissa Monaco's solo home run in the top of the seventh gave No. 15 Connetquot (13-9) a 9-7 lead over No. 7 Smithtown West. Emily Mazzaro went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Amanda Morelli added three hits and two RBIs. Connetquot will play at Whitman in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Whitman 2, Commack 1: Christine Lucido, who struck out 12 in a four-hitter, drove in Maria Pezzino with a two-out single in the top of the fifth to give No. 6 Whitman (16-5) a 2-1 lead over No. 3 Commack. Whitman centerfielder Alexandra Delprete threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game.

Eastport-South Manor 6, Hauppauge 0: Ashley Mendez hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to give No. 3 ESM (17-3) a 3-0 lead over No. 2 Hauppauge in a Suffolk Class A quarterfinal. Melanie Boccio went 2-for-3 with three runs, Michelle Iannone went 2-for-4 and Catherine Havens struck out 10 in a three-hitter. ESM will play at Kings Park at 4 p.m. on Friday in Game 1 of the best-of-three county finals.

Kings Park 6, East Hampton 4: Lindsay Taylor had 12 strikeouts and allowed two earned runs in a four-hitter to lead No. 1 Kings Park (21-1) past No. 4 East Hampton.

Babylon 5, Center Moriches 2: Tianna Giuliano's fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth drove in Lauren Berry to give No. 1 Babylon (18-1) a 3-2 lead over No. 2 Center Moriches in the first game of the best-of-three Class B finals. Dana Smith went 3-for-4 with a two-run single in the sixth inning and Christine Desiderio added three hits and three runs. Game 2 is at 4 p.m. Thursday at Center Moriches.

Port Jefferson 6, Mercy 1: Courtney Fee was 2-for-2 with two runs, Rene Marchewka was 3-for-4 with one RBI and Chelsea Tamuk was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for top-seeded Port Jefferson (16-5) against No. 3 Mercy in Game 1 of a best-of-three Suffolk Class C championship. Game 2 is at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Mercy.
