Tennis beat: Riverhead gets rare win over SWR

Riverhead finally tops SWR

It took some rejiggering and at least 13 years, but last week, Riverhead made a little history.

The Riverhead girls topped Shoreham-Wading River, 4-3, on the strength of two pivotal, tense matches. It's the first time Riverhead has beaten SWR in at least 13 years and possibly ever, coach Jerry Duval said.

Lydia Keiffert beat Jaclyn Millilo, 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 6-3, in fourth singles and Juana Dobrzynski and Jessica Langdon beat Courtney Half and Shannon Baxter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in third doubles. Keiffert, a freshman, was brought up from doubles. Dobrzynski and Langdon came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first match.

"I walk over to the court and Jess is like, 'Don't worry, Coach, this is going to end how you want it to,' " Duval said.

It ended how the girls wanted it to, too. Riverhead lost its top three seniors this year, but are 9-2 in the League VIII developmental league (they finished last year 6-10).

"It's an incredible surprise," Duval said. "There are kids that were playing singles that I have playing doubles for the first time. They're fearless."
