A few early meets had passed Mike Brunoforte by, and his pole vault results were a bit off what he had hoped.
But instead of worrying, the St. Anthony’s senior stayed calm. He had gone through early-season slumps before, and he just kept at it.
“I knew it was going to come eventually,” he said.
His persistence paid off, as he broke the Long Island record in the pole vault at the Loucks Games. His jump of 16-1 made him only the second Long Islander ever to clear 16 feet.
“I wanted to jump high,” Brunoforte said, “but I wasn’t expecting myself to go above 16 feet.”
The Navy Prep-bound Brunoforte also took second overall in the Federation pole vault at Cicero (15-6) and won the CHSAA Intersectional championship with a meet-record 16-0. The senior capped his high school career off by finishing fourth at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals with a vault of 15-8 1/4.
