Athlete of the week: Mount Sinai's Janet Mellor

The featMellor won the 55 meters (7.41 seconds), 55-meter hurdles (8.75 seconds) and 300 (41.8 seconds) at the Suffolk Small Schools Championships last weekend at Suffolk CC-Brentwood. Mount Sinai finished second overall to Kings Park.

The quote"You have to practice running over the hurdles. You can't jump over them. It has to seem like the hurdle isn't really there. You have to be very explosive."

History in the sportThe senior won the county title in the 55 and the 300 as a freshman, sophomore and junior, but the 55 hurdles were a new event to her this year. As a freshman and sophomore, she won the county title in the 200 and 400 meters.

What's next?Mellor will head to the state championships at the end of March, where she'll look to improve on her best finish, second in the 300 as a sophomore. When she graduates after the spring season, Mellor will head to Boston University on a track scholarship, where she hopes to study health sciences.
