Roslyn's Lipari legs out Nationals title in mile

Roslyn's Emily Lipari took first in the mile run at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston on Saturday. The Villanova-bound senior, who also won the Federation 1,500-meter title at Cornell on March 6, won the mile run in 4 minutes, 42.64 seconds.

It was the second straight national championship for Lipari, who won last year's race in 4:47.44.

Other notables in girls events in Boston included Harborfields' Kelsey Margey with a second-place finish in the 800, Joanne Imbert of Valley Stream Central, who was second in the high jump (5 feet, 91/4 inches) and the Garden City 4 x 800 relay team, which also finished second.

North Babylon's Vanessa Stewart was third in the shot put (45-1/4).


West Babylon's Lionel Fontaine finished third in the boys indoor pentathlon Saturday at the National Scholastic Indoor championships at the Armory, making him Long Island's top finisher and qualifying the Cortland-bound senior as All-American.

Fontaine completed the 60-meter hurdles in 8.69 seconds, the long jump in 21-6, the shot put in 38-8. He high-jumped 6-4 and ran the 800 in 2:59. He finished with 3,531 points.

Other notables at the Armory were St. Anthony's Kenneth Walshak with a third-place finish in the 5,000 (15:25.49) and Mike Smith of Riverhead, who was fourth in the shot put (57-61/2).
