Babylon defeated Oyster Bay, 25-16, 25-20, 26-24, in the Class C Long Island volleyball championship Tuesday at Carle Place. It is Babylon's first Long Island championship in program history, according to coach Patrick Donaldson.
"It's something we really worked hard for," said Donaldson, who is in his third year as coach. "It feels great to watch the kids grow into the players they are today. I'm really proud of them."
Senior middle hitter Mary Tighe led the team with her hitting and serving. Down 22-16 in the third set, Babylon (17-2) mounted a comeback and closed the gap to one at 24-23. Tighe then served three straight points, including an ace on the final point to seal the win.
Freshman Margot Zamet had a good all-around game on the front line, sophomore Sara Mayo had great serving throughout the game and outside hitter Lizzy Tighe had consistent hitting.
Babylon will play in the state semifinals in Glens Falls on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
"It's something you dream about, to represent Long Island in the state tournament," Donaldson said. "I'm really happy to see these girls get this opportunity to play for a state championship. It's a very special experience and I hope they enjoy it."
