GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Sachem North boys volleyball team finished its history-making season in the best possible way Friday night.
Led by setter Rob Steinberg and outside hitter Dylan Missry, the Flaming Arrows defeated McQuaid Jesuit (Rochester), 3-1, in the state championship match here, becoming the first Long Island school to win a state Class A title. Sachem North (18-0) won, 25-22, 25-22,22-25, 25-18.
"I couldn't ask for a better ending with this team," said Steinberg, who was named tournament MVP. "I love my teammates, I love my coaches."
Sachem North had won all 57 sets (including pool play) this season before dropping the third set Friday night. The Arrows responded by winning the fourth, taking 12 of its final 17 points. "We just stuck together and realized what we had the opportunity to do," Missry said. "That's what drove us to this championship."
Earlier in the day's pool play, the Flaming Arrows defeated McQuaid and Bethlehem Central in straight sets to qualify for the championship match.
