Well, St. Anthony's did it again.
In a five-game barnburner Tuesday night, they defeated No. 1 Kellenberg to win their fourth straight NSCHSAA title. On Saturday at St. Mary's HS near Buffalo, they aim to win a third consecutive CHSAA state title.
"This team never gave up, no matter what obstacles they faced," Friars coach Donna Newman said. "I told them at the beginning of the year that this was going to take a team effort."
"They just kept coming and coming and coming."
Two Thoughts From Tuesday's Game:
1. These two teams are as evenly matched as it gets, having split two regular season matches and going down to the wire in the final. It was a well-played match between two of the Island's top five or six teams and a testament to the quality of play in the CHSAA.
2. St. Anthony's will be downright scary over the next few years. With five sophomores on its roster, including Julia Forster, next year's team has a shot to be even better.
