Calhoun's Maldarelli outstanding at Sprig Gardner

Calhoun's Mac Maldarelli was named most outstanding wrestler of the Sprig Gardner wrestling tournament at Mepham Saturday.

Maldarelli pinned Peter Abellaneba of Beekmantown (Section VII) at 145 pounds in 1:15 to win the final.

Maldarelli's teammate Anthony Abidin had the most pins in the least amount of time with three in 6:07.

Mepham's Dan Sutherland received the most outstanding wrestler award. Sutherland decisioned Patchogue-Medford's Brendan Cleary, 16-5, to win the 160-pound final.

Other winners included Patchogue-Medford's Ben Scalzo, who decisioned Joe Maher of Bellmore JFK, 3-2, at 112 pounds and Clarke's Mike Leonard, who decisioned Bellmore's Richard Frank, 10-2, at 130.

Calhoun's Jesse Bader decisioned Beekmantown's Nick Abellaneba, 15-4, at 152 pounds and Mepham's Andrew Madden beat Bellmore JFK's Evan Lurie, 7-1, at 135 pounds.

Mepham took first at the tournament with 319 points, Bellmore took second with 280.5 and Patchogue-Medford was third with 249.5.

Wilkinson wins at Whitman. West Babylon's John Wilkinson won by pin in 1:14 at 285 pounds and won the most falls in least amount of time award at the Andrew Peers Tournament at Whitman. Wilkinson had four pins in 3:05.

North Rockland TournamentHauppauge 73, Fordham Prep 11: Anthony Bonaventura decisioned Eric Benito, 6-5, in the 160-pound weight class for Hauppauge.

Hauppauge 65, North Rockland 9: Ryan Senese, behind 4-0, came back at the end of the match to pin Anthony Simini in 4:53 in the 112-pound weight class for Hauppauge.

Stony Brook 42, Long Island Lutheran 35:Austin Hulse pinned Evan Carpenter in 1:42 in the 125-pound weight class for Stony Brook (1-0).


Garden City 58, Sewanhaka West 24:Matt Eulau pinned Joe DeJesus of Sewanhaka West in 1:33 at 119 pounds to lead Garden City.

Garden City 49, Suffern (IX) 31: Matt Schmelzinger won by decision, 3-1, at 135 pounds to lead Garden City.

Kellenberg 52, Great Neck North 28: Anthony Alesandro won by pin in 1:43 at 145 pounds for Kellenberg.



Islip 44, Floyd 27:Kyle Wade won by pin at 152 pounds in 5:16 for Islip at Floyd.

Islip 66, Jericho 18: Ron King decisioned Sean Condon, 2-0, at 145 pounds to lead Islip.
