Long Island has nine top seeds

Five Long Island wrestlers entered this season as defending New York state champions, and all five are top seeds at the state tournament this weekend in Albany.

Four other L.I. wrestlers joined them as top seeds for a impressive total of nine out of the 15 weight classes (6 Suffolk, 2 Nassau and 1 CHSAA), including an incredible three from Rocky Point alone. Here they are...

119 — Grant Greene, St. Anthony's (defending champ)

125 — Nick Arujau, Syosset (two-time defending champ)

140 — Steve Dutton, Rocky Point (pictured, defending champ)

145 — Andy Rodriguez, Central Islip (defending champ)

160 — Anthony Volpe, Rocky Point

171 — Billy Coggins, Rocky Point

189 — Matt Loew, Wantagh

*Note: No Division II wrestlers from Long Island are top seeds. The highest seeded Division II competitor from L.I. is Oskar Ramirez of Hampton Bays, who is seeded seventh at 145 pounds.
