At 5:00 p.m. tonight (at Clarke HS), we have the Nassau team championships, which are preceded by the semis. What makes this day so special is that Suffolk does not have a tourney like this.... where every team in the county is put in a giant pot, and the last team standing wins. Forget school size or conference affiliation, this touney tests the depth and fortitude of the last team standing.
In prior years, the team tourney was broken up into separate Class A and B events. This year, "B" teams like Plainedge can go up against "A" schools like Long Beach and Massapequa. Pequa, the defending "A" champs, might not have enough this year to repeat. Long Beach and MacArthur, Conference 2A rivals, appear to be the favorites.
Those two teams already battled during the regular season, a 36-28 Marines win that wasn't decided until the 215-pound match.
