Meet the athletes who made it onto Newsday's All-Long Island wrestling team for the 2014-15 winter season.

Long Island Wrestler of the Year

Ward Melville, 126 pounds, Sr.

Newsday’s All-Long Island wrestling team is loaded with 11 state champions. Leading the way is our Long Island wrestler of the year Nick Piccininni of Ward Melville at 126 pounds. He became the second wrestler in Long Island history to win four state championships after he beat Ben Lamantia of St. Anthony’s, 3-1, in the final at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Piccinnni battled through a high ankle sprain suffered in a practice prior to the Suffolk League I tournament. He extended Long Island’s longest winning streak to 169 bouts before he was forced to default in the league tournament in two bouts.

Piccinnini roared back and rumbled through the Suffolk sectional tournament to win his fifth Division I title. he finished his career with a 226-5 record. The Oklahoma State-bound Piccininni is the Long Island Wrestler of the Year for the second time.

Sophomore Vito Arujau of Syosset is the Nassau wrestler of the year and will challenge all of Piccininni’s records. Arujau decisioned East Islip senior Jesse Dellavecchia, 11-6, in the final at 132 pounds. Arujau completed a 46-0 season and has a current career record of 136-1.

Arujau has been in three consecutive state title bouts winning the last two. He has won 90 straight matches and capped a brilliant season by winning the sophomore national title where he was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Coach of the Year

Messina became Suffolk’s all-time coaching wins leader this season. His 34-year dual meet record is 441-86-1. Hauppauge won its second Suffolk Tournament title and its 24th league title under Messina.
