It was a banner week for the wrestling programs in the Sachem School District. Jack Mahoney, the father of Sachem wrestling, had to be smiling after both varsity teams in the district won big-time dual meets on successive nights.
Leading off were the Flaming Arrows of Sachem East, who handily beat previously undefeated Connetquot, 46-25, on Thursday to capture the Suffolk League II dual meet title. Freshman Jakob Restrepo (21-0) remained unbeaten with a win over All-County Steve Bulzomi at 120 pounds. Trailing 7-1, Bulzomi, who suffered an inadvertent head injury on a neat switch by Restrepo, had to default the match. Sachem East was brilliant throughout the dual, winning 10 bouts and improving to 16-0.
On Friday, Sean O'Hagan won by major decision at 120 pounds to help Sachem North clinch a 36-29 win over previously undefeated Longwood in a League I dual meet. The win snapped Longwood's 67-match win streak and improved Sachem North to 22-5. The Flaming Arrows of the North can clinch a tie for first place in League I with a Longwood win over Brentwood on Wednesday.
