Wrestling beat: O'Malley tops at Sachem East

The Sachem East wrestling record book just added a touch of brotherly love.

Sean O'Malley's 10-3 decision over Floyd's R.J. Paquette at 145 pounds on Friday gave him a school-record 122 wins, breaking the mark previously held by his older brother, Danny. The elder O'Malley, a 2009 Suffolk champion, wrestles at the University of Maryland.

"I know he looks up to his brother; he always has," Sachem East coach Sean O'Hara said. "I think Sean was pretty pleased, but on Friday, he was just focused on getting the win."

O'Malley, ranked among the top 145-pounders on Long Island, debuted on the Flaming Arrows' varsity as a 96-pound eighth-grader.

"He is somebody who came up through our kids program, so we've always expected him to do very well," O'Hara said.

While he has already supplanted his brother on the wins list, Sean O'Malley would like to add another county title to the family trophy case.

"Now he is doing his best wrestling," O'Hara said. "He is looking forward to the challenge of the league and county championships."
